Barts Cancer Institute Tissue Banks
The CRUK Barts Centre systematically collects primary and metastatic tissue samples from an array of cancer types with the aim to provide high quality, clinically and pathologically well-characterised cancer tissue to the cancer research community. The Barts Cancer Institute hosts four local Tissue Banks: Barts Gynae Tissue Bank, The Haemato-Oncology Study Tissue Bank, The Cancer Tissue Bank and Barts Pancreas Tissue Bank. These supply relevant material to internal and external academics, and to carefully selected commercial collaborations.
The CRUK Barts Centre also currently hosts three national Tissue Banks (Orchid Charity Tissue Bank, Breast Cancer Now Tissue Bank and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund Tissue Bank).
Barts Gynae Tissue Bank
The Barts Gynae Tissue Bank (BGTB) collects, stores and shares tissue samples for translational research into gynaecological cancers. The tissues the BGTB collects are primarily surplus to diagnostic and therapeutic requirements, with consent from patients with suspected and confirmed gynaecological conditions, as well as normal samples from patients in remission or healthy volunteers.
The BGTB provides quality samples and/or clinical data to local, national and international researchers (dependent on approval from the BGTB Management Committee) to investigate the causes of gynaecological cancers, improve early diagnosis and preventive strategies as well as develop more effective treatments.
Well annotated and pseudonymised healthcare data about consented BGTB participants are available to facilitate research depending on the clinical, pathological and molecular features of the diseases.
Haemato-Oncology Tissue Bank
The Haemato-Oncology Tissue Bank (HOTB) collects, stores and shares tissue samples with consent from patients with known or suspected haematological malignancies. Tissue is collected during their clinical management at diagnosis and at varying stages in the course of their illness and is primarily surplus to diagnostic and therapeutic requirements. Blood is also collected from healthy volunteers.
The HOTB provides quality tissue with associated clinical data to local, national and international researchers in order to identify molecular biological processes involved in the pathogenesis of haematological malignancies with a view to discovering targets for therapy.
Well annotated and pseudonymised healthcare data about participants who have consented to HOTB is available to facilitate analysis of the tissue depending on the clinical, pathological, and molecular features of the diseases.
Cancer Tissue Bank
The Cancer Tissue Bank is a dedicated research collaboration between scientists, clinicians and patients aiming to collect, store and provide high quality tissue from all cancer types to researchers at the Barts Cancer Institute and other external institutions nationally and internationally.

Barts Gynae Tissue Bank
We work closely with the Gynaecological Oncology Team at the Barts Health NHS Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) to collect samples from consented patients for clinical research. We welcome all offers of tissue donation from eligible patients. A representative should be available before operations and procedures undertaken at Royal London Hospital and University College London Hospital to discuss your wishes and answer your questions. To identify potentially eligible participants at Barts Health NHS Trust (not at UCLH), the Tissue Bank Staff access minimal identifiable information (name, date of birth, NHS number and diagnosis) to pre-screen clinic appointment lists before consent can be obtained. All Tissue Banks hosted at Barts Cancer Institute aim to provide high-quality, clinically well-annotated tissue to qualified researchers in academia and commercial partners to accelerate cancer research in a standardised and ethical fashion.
All access request will be reviewed for scientific merit and feasibility by the Management Committee of each Tissue Bank.
