Research Impact

The REF will assess each UoA’s research environment. Each Unit will submit an environment statement complemented by a University environment statement.

The Unit-level environment statement will discuss:

  • Unit context and structure, research and impact strategy
  • People – with a particular focus on staff development (including PGR students)
  • Income, infrastructure and facilities
  • Collaboration and contribution to the research base, economy and society.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the means of assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is a process of expert review of subject-based Units of Assessments (UoAs) and is organised and undertaken by the four British Research Councils.

Due to the nature of the work carried out at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University of London, it aligns with REF submission for UoA1: Clinical Medicine. Expert panels assess three distinct elements of an HEI’s research:

  • the quality of research outputs
  • the impact of the research beyond academia
  • the environment that supports the research.
