Taught: Full time - semester 1; Part time - year 1, semester 1

Module Aims:

Comprehensive understanding of the history and core principles of laparoscopic surgery and how the tools work

Students will learn basic and advanced laparoscopy skills using surgical simulator technology, so that students:
• Develop eye-hand coordination and depth perception
• Undertake laparoscopic instrument manipulation
• Develop tissue handling and cutting skills

Learning Outcomes:

Theory
1. History of Laparoscopy
2. Setting up of the Laparoscopy stack
3. Trouble shooting with laparoscopy stacks during operation
4. The role of simulation in surgical training, including advantages and disadvantages of training by simulation.

Practical
1. Develop eye-hand coordination and depth perception
2. Undertake laparoscopic instrument manipulation
3. Develop tissue handling and cutting skills

Module Aims:

The main aim of the module is to provide instruction and practical training to perform laparoscopic suturing.

This module provides an overview of laparoscopic suturing and knot tying techniques, which will include needle loading and both intracorporeal and extracorporeal knots. The theory topics covered in this modules will introduce the learner to safe practice and principles of laparoscopic surgery.

Theory

  1. How to obtain laparoscopic access to and closure of the peritoneal cavity
  2. Physiological Effects of Pneumoperitoneum & role diagnostic laparoscopy
  3. Principles of Laparoscopic Hemostasis
  4. Diagnostic Laparoscopy
  5. Intracorporeal and extracorporeal laparoscopic suturing and knot tying techniques

Practical

  1. Manipulate and load a needle laparoscopically for tissue approximation
  2. Roeders Knot and Endoloop tying
  3. Perform Intracorporeal and extracorporeal laparoscopic suturing and knot tying.

Module Aims:

Through this module students will:

  • Learn "Strategies for Minimizing Bile Duct Injuries:" Adopting a Universal Culture of Safety in Cholecystectomy
  • Develop judgment and learn interpretation of anatomical and operative findings necessary to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Develop an understanding of application of the basic principles associated with the use of electrosurgery in the operating room
  • Learn how to trouble shoot and manage complications

  1. NICE Guidelines Gallstone disease: diagnosis and management
  2. SAGES Safe Cholecystectomy Program
  3. Diagnosis and management of complication after cholecystectomy
  4. Use of Surgical Energy - types of energy source used in operating theatres for haemostasis and discuss their uses, hazards and preventions.

Practical

  1. Learn "Strategies for Minimizing Bile Duct Injuries:" Adopting a Universal Culture of Safety in Cholecystectomy
  2. Trouble shooting during laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  3. Hands on laparoscopic cholecystectomy training on simulator

Module Aims:

Comprehensive understanding of the technique and core principles of bowel anastomosis and how the bowel stapling devices work

Student will learn both basic and advanced bowel anastomosis including:

  • Technique of Hand-Sewn Anastomosis
  • Technique Stapled Anastomosis
  • Knowledge of different types of surgical staplers and indications for use
Learning Outcomes:

Theory

  1. Bowel Anastomosis Indication, Pre-procedural Planning, Patient Preparation and Anastomosis Technique
  2. Types of anasomosis stapling devices and their uses
  3. Managing complications of anastomosis

Practical

  1. Handling of surgical staplers on Virtual Reality - Touch Surgery
  2. Hands on training using animal or synthetic model for bowel anastomosis

Module Aims:
  • Compulsory Module - To provide an in-depth understanding of research methods and critical appraisal of literature.
  • Develop academic writing skills necessary for writing a critical and structured scientific paper and dissertation/proposal.
  • Understand how to conduct research in a clinical setting through application of good cliental practice, ethics, and risk assessments.
